COLL 150 Adventure Leadership - 2 credits - Course ID 003638 - Section 14
Classroom & Meeting Times
Halenbeck Hall Room 344
Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:00pm
Do you see yourself wanting more out of your education than a classroom experience? Education is an adventure with a wide variety of outcomes. We have developed an outstanding opportunity for first year students to be engaged in their college experience while using the outdoors as the classroom. This short-term, intensive class involves learning basic outdoor leadership skills and is reflects on the successes & challenges of transitioning to college. The course involves working together, as a class, to plan a three-day backpacking trip in Michigan’s gorgeous Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park. Pre-trip meetings will be hands-on and involve students taking an active role in route selection, meal planning, backcountry navigation, natural & cultural history, group travel and safety management. In addition to the meeting times scheduled below, students will be required to review course materials in advance and complete assignments prior to the first class.
Backpacking Trip Location
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is home to the most extensive band of old growth trees in the region. 31,000 acres of rugged terrain set aside as a State Park in 1954. Shaped by glaciers, this area has some of the regions most varied topography and is often overlooked as a destination. COLL 150 Adventure Leadership uses this amazing location as a learning laboratory for this field-based portion of the course.
